A code instead of an invite over email
I think you should have people make their teams (like they do now) and then have them email a code. Then anyone who wants to join the site can enter a code in a "join a new team" box or something. It would be way easier.

It would be great if you could sort the team by the number on their jumpers., rather than alphabetically by first name
Be able to list the team by number or alphabetically. In our team, we had people who had used lower caps instead of Capitals at the start of the name and so they were not in order.
